153 | Niche Blogging: How It Started vs. How It’s Going

In this episode, I’m sharing my current journey with a niche blog How It Started vs. How It’s Going. I want to encourage you to consider breaking off any posts or categories of your blog that don’t naturally fit and start something new with potential! Have fun!

Niche Blogging: How It All Started

Back in March 2024, my main blog, SouthernCrushHome.com, was hit hard by the March Google update, a common experience for many bloggers. Faced with this challenge, I needed to pivot to keep my blogging dreams alive. As I reviewed my blog’s categories, I noticed that my travel posts didn’t quite fit with the rest of my lifestyle content, which primarily focuses on crafting, DIY, home decor, and recipes.

Given this disconnect, I decided to create a separate blog specifically for travel content. This led to the launch of Southern Crush on the Road in April 2024. At that time, I had 21 travel-related posts on my old site, but I needed to strategize the transfer of these posts to the new blog.

The Transfer Process

Here’s how I managed the transition:

  1. Select Top Posts: I chose six top-performing posts based on social shares and page views from Google Analytics.
  2. Copy and Paste: I transferred these posts verbatim to the new site, updated them as needed, and added images.
  3. Redirect Old Links: I used the Redirection plugin to redirect old post URLs to their new locations. This ensures that any traffic to the old posts would be redirected to the new site.
  4. Ongoing Content: I continued posting new content about our trips and experiences as they happened, keeping the blog active and engaging.

Niche Blogging How It’s Going

Despite the challenges and the general skepticism around the travel niche, the new blog is thriving. Here’s a quick update on its performance:

  • Traffic and Growth: In just four months, with 20 posts (8 new and 12 migrated from the old site), I’m halfway to qualifying for Mediavine’s Journey program, which requires 10,000 sessions.
  • Traffic Sources: Half of the traffic is organic, thanks to improved keyword research. The other half comes from direct efforts like email marketing and social media promotions.
  • Pinterest Strategy: I’ve also started a dedicated Pinterest account for the new blog, pinning regularly and creating individual boards for each blog post. This strategy is showing promising results, with significant growth in monthly page views.

Why It’s Worth It

Starting a niche blog has been a rewarding experience for several reasons:

  • Personal Enjoyment: I love documenting our trips and experiences. It’s like a journal for my family and me, and it’s fun to share our adventures.
  • Content Creation: I’m constantly inspired to find new content opportunities, whether it’s a day trip or a special event.
  • Monetization Potential: With the progress I’m making, I’m optimistic about future monetization and excited to see where this journey takes me.
